Some of the most exciting and innovative music to ever exist has come from Jazz. The chief component of Jazz that makes it so innovative is it’s use of improvisation. However, it is also quite purposeful through its essential use of composition, arrangement, and ensemble. It is a constantly evolving and expanding musical style that has gone through various phases since its inception in the early 1900’s. A proficient Jazz musician is well versed in music theory, technique, and application and uses that knowledge to create complex and innovative works that push the genre forward. These Jazz musicians use all types of scales, modes, harmony, and complex rhythms to create their compositions and continually push the boundaries of music.
When you hear the term ‘classical’ you probably think of history’s most famous classical composers such as Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven. The term refers to music composed from about the mid 1700’s to the early 1800’s and is characterized by homophonic melodies and light or airy sounds. It grew out of a rebellion against the rules of Baroque music, which dominated the era previous to Classical music. Classical music composers utilize a variety of keys, melodies, rhythms, and dynamics along with changes in mood and timbre. A core component of Classical music is breaking a few rules to discover something new, therefore making it an innovative and expansive style.
